Tooth Extractions
At Edgewater Dental, we value preventive care above all else. Naturally, cavities and other dental misfortunes can still occur. When they do, we always aim to preserve the tooth and maintain as much of its structure as possible. But there are times when a tooth simply can’t be saved and must be extracted. If that happens, we’re here for you—offering compassionate, expert tooth extractions.
Are Tooth Extractions Painful?
Probably not as much as you’re anticipating! Many patients report that receiving the local anesthesia is the most uncomfortable part of the process—and even that is just a quick pinch. We apply a topical numbing agent beforehand to minimize any discomfort.
As for the actual procedure, you shouldn’t feel pain at all. If you do, just let us know—we’ll pause and administer more anesthesia as needed. Afterward, some mild soreness or achiness is normal and can be easily managed with over-the-counter NSAIDs like ibuprofen.
We understand that many people fear tooth extractions and sometimes avoid dental care because of it. Please don’t let fear stop you from getting help. Our team is gentle, respectful, and patient—we’ll make sure you’re well taken care of every step of the way.
When is a Tooth Extraction Necessary?
A tooth extraction might be recommended for one of the following reasons:
The tooth has suffered a traumatic injury and cannot be saved.
Severe decay makes the tooth unrestorable.
Periodontal disease has compromised the tooth’s stability.
A tooth must be removed for orthodontic reasons.
The tooth is impacted (often the case with wisdom teeth).
A failed root canal or restoration needs to be addressed.
The Extraction-to-Implant Pipeline
In most cases, we’ll recommend replacing the extracted tooth—and not just for appearance’s sake. Replacement helps to:
Improve the appearance of your smile
Prevent nearby teeth from shifting and affecting your bite
Maintain jawbone structure and prevent bone loss
Preserve the natural shape and contour of your face
Our first choice for replacement is typically a dental implant with a crown, as it most closely replicates the look, feel, and function of a natural tooth. Implants also help to stimulate and preserve jawbone health.
For patients who aren’t candidates for implants, we also offer bridges and other restorations tailored to your needs.
